Location and Topography:
Location: Nilgiris District, Tamil Nadu, at the tri-junction of Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu.
Geography: Situated on the Nilgiri hills (Western Ghats), with elevations from 960m to 1266m. The Moyar River flows through it.
Ecological Significance: A key part of the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve (1st Biosphere Reserve in India). It maintains connectivity with Bandipur Tiger Reserve (Karnataka) and Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (Kerala).
Habitat: Features diverse vegetation, including tropical evergreen forest, moist deciduous forest, teak forests, grasslands, and swamps.
- Key Fauna: Home to elephants, tigers, gaur, leopards, wild dogs, sambar, and spotted deer. It hosts approximately 8% of India’s bird species.
