About Green Steel
- Green Steel refers to steel produced through low-emission production pathways, with significantly lower greenhouse-gas emissions than conventional steelmaking.
- The Ministry of Steel is leading India’s efforts towards the decarbonisation of the iron and steel sector.
I. Green Steel Taxonomy for India
- The Ministry of Steel released India’s Taxonomy of Green Steel on 12 December 2024.
- It was subsequently notified in the e-Gazette on 23 December 2024.
- The taxonomy provides a framework for defining and categorising green steel based on greenhouse-gas emission intensity.
- Under the taxonomy, green steel is classified according to the CO₂-equivalent emission intensity per tonne of finished steel.
- Green steel: Steel with emission intensity below 2.2 tonnes of CO₂e per tonne of finished steel.
II. Greening the Steel Sector: Roadmap & Action Plan
- The Ministry of Steel released the “Greening the Steel Sector in India: Roadmap and Action Plan” in 2024.
- The roadmap is based on the recommendations of 14 Task Forces comprising stakeholders from government, industry, technology providers, academia and other institutions.
- Major Decarbonisation Pathways
- Energy efficiency
- Renewable energy
- Green hydrogen
- Material efficiency
- Transition from coal-based DRI to natural-gas-based DRI
- Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS)
- Use of biochar
- Greater scrap utilisation and circularity
III. Green Steel Certification
- The Green Steel Taxonomy provides the basis for green steel certification.
- As of 31 March 2026, 89 steel units had received green steel certification, covering a production volume of 12.34 million tonnes.
