About Hutatma Smruti Smarak
The Hutatma Smruti Smarak (Martyrs’ Memorial) at Patradevi, in Pernem taluka, northern Goa, commemorates the satyagrahis who sacrificed their lives during the Goa Liberation Movement. It was redeveloped by the Government of Goa through the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) at a cost of approximately ₹9.50 crore, and inaugurated on August 26, 2026 by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, along with Goa Chief Minister Dr. Pramod P. The Patradevi Satyagraha (1955)
- On August 15, 1955, thousands of unarmed satyagrahis marched into Goa through Patradevi carrying the Indian flag, demanding integration with India.
- Portuguese troops opened machine-gun fire on the unarmed marchers; approximately 74 satyagrahis died in the broader liberation struggle.
