About the Indo-German Environment Forum (IGEF)
The Indo-German Environment Forum (IGEF) is the highest-level bilateral platform for environmental cooperation between India and Germany, established in 2008. It is jointly organised by MoEFCC and Germany’s BMUKN/BMUV, with APA and FICCI.
Ahead of the ministerial forum, three Joint Working Groups on Climate Change, Biodiversity and Circular Economy meet to coordinate priorities, review progress and shape the bilateral environmental agenda.

Key Historical Milestones
- 4th IGEF (September 1, 2026, New Delhi): co-chaired by Union Minister Bhupender Yadav and Germany’s Carsten Schneider under the theme “Together For More Resilience”; the ministers signed a Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) on the Conservation and Wise Use of Wetlands of International Importance.
- 3rd IGEF (February 13, 2019, New Delhi): held under the theme “Cleaner Air, Greener Economy,” inaugurated by Dr. Harsh Vardhan and Svenja Schulze, resulting in agreements to combat air pollution and develop environmental reference documents for the textile industry.
Naming Trap: Distinguishing the Indo-German Energy Forum
- Same Acronym, Different Platform: the Indo-German Energy Forum (also abbreviated IGEF) is a separate body, established in April 2006 at the Hannover Fair by the Prime Minister of India and the Chancellor of Germany, co-chaired at Secretary level.
- Mandate: covers technical and policy cooperation across five sub-groups — thermal/fossil plant efficiency, renewable energies, demand-side efficiency (led by India’s Bureau of Energy Efficiency), green energy finance and grid integration, and green hydrogen.
- Examination Value: the acronym overlap between the two distinctly-mandated IGEFs is a frequently tested naming trap.
Overarching Framework: GSDP
- Umbrella Partnership: both the Environment and Energy Forums feed into the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (GSDP), signed in 2022.
- Financial Commitment: Germany has committed €10 billion by 2030 in climate finance, mostly as soft loans via the KfW Development Bank; approximately €5 billion had been utilised or earmarked as of early 2026.
