IAF’s Sarang Helicopter Team Reaches Egypt for International Airshow

Context

• Recently, the IAF’s Sarang Helicopter Display Team set to reach Egypt to participate in the El Alamein International Airshow, showcasing the indigenous ALH Dhruv helicopters.

About El Alamein International Airshow

• The El Alamein International Air Show and Space Exhibition (EIAS) is a major international aviation and aerospace event hosted by Egypt at El Alamein.
• The First edition was held in 2024; the second edition (EIAS 2026) to be held in September 2026.
• Purpose: Brings together air forces, aircraft manufacturers, aerospace and space companies to showcase aircraft, technologies and aerial displays and to promote international cooperation.
• Egypt expects 250+ exhibitors from around 50 countries, 100+ aircraft, and 50+ aerial displays, with around 12,000 visitors.
• It is important for India because the participation of the IAF’s Sarang team provides an opportunity to showcase the indigenous ALH Dhruv and strengthens India–Egypt defence and diplomatic engagement.

About Sarang Helicopter Display Team

• The Sarang Helicopter Display Team of the Indian Air Force (IAF) was established in 2003 as India’s dedicated helicopter aerobatic/display team.
• Team composition: Known for operating five helicopters in formation, making it the world’s only five-helicopter aerobatic display team.
• Manoeuvres:They are famed for tight, close-proximity formations and signature stunts like the “Dolphin Leap” and the newly introduced “Spot Stall Turn”.
• International role: The team participates in major air shows abroad, serving as a form of India’s defence diplomacy and international engagement.
• Aircrafts: The team flies five indigenously designed and built Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Dhruv Mk-I Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) equipped with special smoke canisters.

About ALH Dhruv

• ALH Dhruv (Advanced Light Helicopter) is a multi-role helicopter designed and developed in India by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
• Major roles: It can be used for troop transport, logistics, search and rescue, medical evacuation and other military operations.
• Tri-services use: Dhruv variants are operated by the Indian Army, Indian Air Force, Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard.
• ALH Mk-III: Advanced utility variant, powered by Shakti engines, with enhanced avionics and electronic warfare capabilities.
• The Dhruv has been exported internationally, with the Mauritius Police and Nepal Army among its overseas operators.
