Context
- APNIC 62 is being hosted in Mumbai by the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) and the Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI), with the support of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Government of Maharashtra.
What is APNIC?
- The Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC) is the Regional Internet Registry (RIR) responsible for managing Internet number resources in the Asia Pacific region.
- It manages critical Internet resources such as IP addresses and Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs).
- APNIC operates across 56 economies in the Asia Pacific region.
- It works with Internet Service Providers, network operators, governments, businesses and community networks to support the stable, secure and reliable growth of the Internet.
- APNIC is a technical, not regulatory or political, organisation and works to maintain an open and interoperable Internet.

About NIXI and APNIC MoU
- NIXI and APNIC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
- The MoU aims to enhance the deployment of key Internet infrastructure technologies, particularly:
- IPv6
- Routing security
- The cooperation is expected to contribute to the security, resilience and long-term development of India’s Internet infrastructure.

I. National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI)
- NIXI is an important organisation in India’s Internet ecosystem.
- It works in areas related to Internet exchange, domain names and Internet infrastructure.
- Core Functions OF NIXI:
- Internet Exchange: Facilitates the exchange of Internet traffic among Internet Service Providers (ISPs), improving connectivity and reducing dependence on international routes.
- .IN Domain Registry: Manages and promotes India’s country-code top-level domain “.IN”, supporting India’s digital identity.
- Internet Infrastructure: Promotes IPv6 adoption, Internet security and resilient digital infrastructure to support the growth of India’s Internet ecosystem.
II. Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI)
- It was set up in 1998 with a mission to “Promote Internet for the benefit of all”.
- Advocates for balanced regulatory and taxation regimes between traditional telecom/internet operators and Over-the-Top (OTT) communication platforms.
- It provides a platform for Internet operators to exchange technical knowledge and address issues affecting Internet connectivity and infrastructure.
