Despite having only around 1% of the world’s vehicles, India accounts for nearly 11% of global road traffic fatalities. Recent judicial attention to seat belts, helmets and child restraints highlights an important concern, but road safety requires a systemic approach rather than dependence on individual compliance or judicial intervention alone.

Introduction

Road safety is not merely a matter of responsible driving, it is a question of governance, infrastructure, enforcement, vehicle design and public health. India therefore needs to shift from a fault-based approach to a “Safe System” approach, where roads and transport systems are designed to minimise both the probability and severity of crashes.

Understanding India’s Road Safety Crisis

  • High mortality: India has a disproportionately high share of global road fatalities despite a relatively small share of the global vehicle fleet.
