Context

• Union Home Minister recently addressed “Hindi Diwas 2026” and the “6th All India Official Language Conference” which washeld in Mumbai.
• The occasion underscores efforts to promote Hindi as an official language while simultaneously recognising and strengthening India’s diverse multilingual linguistic landscape.

Major Announcements & Initiatives

• Hindi Shabd-Sindhu Expansion: Expanded to 8 lakh words, including 50,000+ words from Indian languages and words coined by Veer Savarkar; targeted to become the world’s largest dictionary by 2029.
• Education & Language Policy: NEP promotes mother-tongue education in primary classes and learning a second Indian languageto support ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’; JEE, NEET and UG entrance exams are conducted in 13 languages.
• Technology & Official Language Tools: The AI-based Kanthasth 2.0 platform (featuring a database of over 50 million/5 crore sentences) has been made available to foreign users.
• Commemorative Literary Releases: Released key publications, including a special ‘Vande Mataram’ edition of Rajbhasha Bharati, ‘Bharatiya Gyan Tantra: Srot aur Swaroop’, and ‘Andheron Se Ujalon Tak’, featuring writings by prison inmates.

Winners of Awards (2025–26)

• Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar: The highest national award recognising excellence in the use of Hindi in official work by Central Government ministries, departments, PSUs and banks.
  • First Prize: Department of Financial Services (DFS), Ministry of Finance.
• Rajbhasha Gaurav Puraskar: Awarded to citizen authors, scholars and Central Government employees for outstanding original non-fiction, scientific and technical literature in Hindi.
