What is Broad Gauge (BG)?
- Broad Gauge (BG) is a railway track gauge in which the distance between the inner faces of the two rails is 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in).
- It is the standard gauge used by Indian Railways and forms the backbone of the country’s railway network.
- Owing to its greater width, Broad Gauge provides higher stability, speed, and load-carrying capacity compared to narrower gauges.
Where is it found?
- Broad Gauge constitutes almost the entire operational railway network of India.
- It is used for:
- Passenger trains.

- High-speed and semi-high-speed services such as Vande Bharat Express.
- Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs).
