  • Recently, the “Ancient Buddhist Site of Sarnath” has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List at the 48th Session of the World Heritage Committee held at Busan, South Korea.
  • The 21-member World Heritage Committee, UNESCO Secretariat, and key advisory bodies (ICOMOS, IUCN, ICCROM) congratulated India on this historic milestone.
  • It is India’s 45th World Heritage property and was the country’s official nomination for the 2025–26 cycle.
  • With this, Uttar Pradesh now has four World Heritage Sites — the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri and Sarnath.

About Ancient Buddhist Site of Sarnath

  • Location: Varanasi district, Uttar Pradesh.
  • The serial property comprises two component parts:
    • Chaukhandi Stupa
    • Archaeological Remains of Sarnath, including Dhamekh Stupa, Dharmarajika Stupa, Mulagandhakuti Vihara and Ashokan Pillar.
  • Ancient Names: Sarnath was known in Buddhist tradition as Rishipatana, Ishipatana and Mrigadava.
  • Historical Significance: Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon at Sarnath in the 6th century BCE, known as Dharmachakra Pravartana (Turning of the Wheel of the Law).
  • This event marked the inception of the Buddhist Sangha and the establishment of the principles of the Noble Eightfold Path.
  • Sarnath is one of the four principal Buddhist pilgrimage sites (Chatur Mahasthana) indicated by the Buddha himself:

Key Archaeological Discoveries at Sarnath

  • Ashokan Lion Capital: Excavated at Sarnath (1904–05), featuring four lions standing back-to-back atop an abacus with four animals (Elephant, Horse, Bull, Lion) separated by 24-spoked wheels (Dharmachakra).
    • Adopted as the National Emblem of India (1950).
    • The Dharmachakra forms the central wheel of the Indian National Flag.
  • Dharmachakra Pravartana Buddha: Sculpted in Chunar sandstone during the Classical Gupta period (5th century CE), depicting Buddha in Dharmachakra Mudra (turning the wheel of law). It is housed at the Sarnath Archaeological Museum (India’s oldest site museum, est. 1904).
