About PSLV

  • The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) is India’s third-generation launch vehicle, designed and operated by ISRO, and operational as the agency’s workhorse since its first successful flight in October 1994.
  • It was the first Indian rocket designed with liquid propulsion stages, using alternating solid and liquid fuel across its four stages, standing about 44 metres tall with a lift-off mass of up to 320 tonnes.

  • Launch Site: Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), Sriharikota.
  • POEM Platform: The spent fourth stage is repurposed as the PSLV Orbital Experimental Module to host in-orbit experiments instead of becoming debris.
  • Recent Anomalies: PSLV-C61 (May 2025) and PSLV-C62 (January 2026) faced technical anomalies during the third-stage (PS3) burn, prompting technical review.
  • Historic Success Rate: Approximately 92% across more than 60 missions and 340+ satellites launched.
