About Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UNFCCC

  • COP stands for Conference of the Parties, the supreme decision-making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
  • The UNFCCC was adopted in 1992 at the Rio Earth Summit and entered into force in 1994.
  • First COP: COP1, Berlin (1995).
  • Frequency: Held annually, unless the Parties decide otherwise.
  • Purpose: Reviews the implementation of the UNFCCC and adopts decisions to address climate change, mitigation, adaptation, climate finance, technology transfer and capacity building.
  • Membership: Almost universal, with 198 Parties to the UNFCCC.
  • Important milestones:
