Context

  • Recently, the Government of India highlighted the progress of the PM E-DRIVE Scheme, with 26.59 lakh EVs sold under it (as of June 2026) and its implementation extended till 31 March 2028. The scheme provides upfront purchase incentives and supports e-buses, charging stations and testing facilities.

About PM E-DRIVE Scheme

  • Full Form: PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement Scheme.
  • Implementing Ministry: Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI).
  • Launch: Launched in September 2024; implemented from October 2024.
  • Coverage: Pan-India.
  • Duration: Originally notified for two years; extended to 31 March 2028.
  • Total Outlay: ₹11,900 crore.
  • Objectives: Faster EV adoption through upfront purchase incentives, charging infrastructure development, domestic EV manufacturing and reduced transport-related emissions.

Eligible Categories and Incentives

  • Categories covered: e-2 Wheelers, e-3 Wheelers (including registered e-rickshaws, e-carts and L5), e-Ambulances, e-Trucks, e-Buses, charging infrastructure and upgradation of testing agencies.
  • e-2 Wheelers: Incentive of ₹2,500 per kWh, capped at ₹5,000 per vehicle; for vehicles priced up to ₹1.5 lakh ex-factory.

Key Achievements

  • EVs: About 28.30 lakh EVs supported for incentivisation; 26.59 lakh EVs sold (as of June 2026).
  • e-Buses: ₹4,391 crore allocated for 14,028 e-buses; 14,000 allocated (as of August 2026).
  • Cities: 13,800 e-buses allocated to seven cities: Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune and Surat.
  • EV Public Charging Stations (EV PCS): ₹2,000 crore earmarked nationwide; ₹851 crore approved for 8,147 chargers to 3 oil marketing companies and 10 states (as of 28 September 2026).
  • Testing Agencies: ₹780 crore allocated for modernisation and upgradation of vehicle testing agencies.

  • Buyers: Upfront incentives lower the purchase price of eligible EVs.
