  • India’s digital payments ecosystem has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past decade, driven by the vision of creating a simple, secure and accessible payment system.
  • As of 2026, UPI is live in 11 foreign countries for UPI acceptance and/or cross-border remittances, with Greece and the Maldives being the latest additions.

About Unified Payments Interface (UPI)

  • Unified Payments Interface (UPI): A real-time, interoperable digital payment system that allows multi-bank transactions via a single mobile application.
  • Developer & Governing Body: Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) (an initiative of the Reserve Bank of India and Indian Banks’ Association under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007).
  • Security Standards: Operates on Two-Factor Authentication (2FA), end-to-end encryption, and biometric integrations (on-device fingerprint, face unlock, and Aadhaar-based Face Authentication).
  • Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI): Forms the foundational payment layer of the India Stack, along with Identity (Aadhaar) and Data Exchange (DigiLocker/Account Aggregator).

  • BHIM (Bharat Interface for Money): NPCI-developed app launched in Dec 2016 for direct bank-to-bank mobile transfers.
