  • Density: Lightest solid element and least-dense metal.
  • Reactivity: Highly reactive and flammable; does not occur freely in nature and is stored under mineral oil or inert conditions.
  • Electrochemical Potential: Highest among metals, making lithium highly suitable for rechargeable batteries.
  • Geological Occurrence:

Found primarily in two distinct geological formations:

  • Pegmatitic Minerals: Hard-rock deposits (e.g., spodumene).
  • Brines: Saline groundwater beneath high-altitude salt flats (salars) and geothermal waters.

  • The Lithium Triangle: A region in South America covering Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile that holds approximately 54% of global lithium reserves beneath its arid salt flats.

  • Regulatory Classification: Classified as a “Critical and Strategic Mineral” under the MMDR (Mines and Minerals Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2023, enabling the Central Government to auction mineral blocks to private players.
  • Identified Reserves:
    • Reasi District (Jammu & Kashmir): Inferred resources (G3 category) of 5.9 million tonnes discovered in the Salal-Haimna region.
    • Mandya (Karnataka): Smaller pegmatite-hosted lithium deposits.
  • Potential Belts for Exploration:
    • Mica Belts: Rajasthan, Bihar, and Andhra Pradesh.
    • Pegmatite Belts: Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
    • Brine Sources: Rann of Kutch (Gujarat).

Government Initiatives for Supply Chain Security

  • KABIL (Khanij Bidesh India Ltd): A Joint Venture of three Central Public Sector Enterprises—NALCO, HCL, and MECL—mandated to identify, explore, and acquire strategic overseas mineral assets (e.g., acquiring 5 lithium brine blocks in Catamarca, Argentina).
  • Mineral Security Partnership (MSP): India joined this US-led international coalition to secure resilient, sustainable, and diversified critical mineral supply chains globally.
