What are Magnetorheological (MR) Fluids?

What are Magnetorheological (MR) Fluids?

Important for GS Prelims: Science & Technology

Introduction

Magnetorheological fluids are smart materials consisting of magnetically polarizable particles, such as nano iron powder, suspended in a carrier fluid. On exposure to an external magnetic field, an MR fluid changes almost instantly from a free-flowing liquid into a viscoelastic semi-solid, and reverts when the field is removed.

Development of Magnetorheological Fluid in India

With support from the Department of Science and Technology (DST), scientists at IIT Patna have developed a hybrid magneto-rheometer to analyse the flow, deformation, friction and wear behaviour of magnetorheological fluids under both magnetic and non-magnetic conditions, particularly in the challenging compression-plus-shear mode. The technology can contribute to the development of more efficient smart-material-based applications.

Key Facts on Magnetorheological fluids
