Context
- The Indian Air Force (IAF) inaugurated the first Dronathon-2026 at the Pokhran Field Firing Range, Jaisalmer, in September 2026.
- The three-day initiative brings together defence companies, start-ups, MSMEs, DPSUs and innovators to assess emerging unmanned technologies under realistic operational conditions.
What is the importance of the Dronathon?
- Dronathon-2026 is the initiative of Indian Air Force to test new drone technologies in real operational conditions at the Pokhran Field Firing Range, Jaisalmer.
- It tests Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) for surveillance, reconnaissance, autonomous operations, swarm technologies and Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (CUAS).
- The ‘IAF UAS Roadmap’ was released to guide industry, academia and research organisations on the IAF’s future drone requirements.
- Here Indian Air Force successfully demonstrated a key capability of “Vayu UTtaM,” its indigenously developed multi-mode Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) system.
Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS)
- Meaning: UAS are systems involving an aircraft without a pilot onboard, along with the equipment required to operate and control it.
- Components: They generally include the unmanned aircraft, control systems, communication links and mission-related equipment.
- Uses: UAS can perform tasks such as surveillance, reconnaissance, monitoring, autonomous operations and other military or civilian missions.
About Vayu UTtaM
- What it is: An indigenously developed multi-mode Unmanned Traffic Management system demonstrated by the IAF during Dronathon-2026.
- What it does: Tracks military and civilian unmanned aircraft in real time and helps manage their operations in crowded airspace.
- Rogue Drone Detection: Helps detect, track and mitigate unauthorised or rogue drones.
- Wider Uses: Can support defence, civil aviation, critical infrastructure protection and public safety.

Context
Dronathon-2026 strengthens the IAF’s ability to assess UAS for real-world operational effectiveness in contested environments.
It shifts the focus from technology demonstration to operational capability, with participation from 20+ organisations. The initiative promotes Atmanirbharta across airframes, propulsion, sensors, payloads, communications, autonomy, electronic warfare and countermeasures.
