Context
Recently, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), in coordination with the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU), Trichy, intercepted an attempt to smuggle 45 live reptiles into India at Trichy International Airport.
Key Highlights of the Operation
- Wildlife seized: 45 live reptiles concealed in 27 food packets.
- Condition: The reptiles were found sedated.
- Species recovered:
- 23 Corn Snakes
- 16 Ball Pythons
- 5 Argentine Black and White Tegus
- 1 Snow White Iguana
About Recovered Reptile Species
1. Corn Snake

- Distribution: Native to the southeastern and central United States.
- Habitat: Forests, grasslands and agricultural areas.
- Diet: Carnivorous (rodents like mice and small rats).
- Characteristics:
- Non-venomous snake known for its reddish-orange colour and patterned scales.
- Lacks heat-sensing pits; relies primarily on visual acuity and tongue flicking (Jacobson’s organ) to detect chemical trails.
- May vibrate its tail rapidly against dry leaves to mimic a rattlesnake sound when cornered.
2. Ball Python

- Distribution: Native to West and Central Africa.
- Habitat: Grasslands, shrublands and open forests.
- Diet: Primarily feeds on small mammals.
- Characteristics:
- A non-venomous constrictor that curls into a tight ball when threatened, giving it its name.
- Nocturnal and terrestrial; spends daylight hours hidden in underground rodent burrows or termite mounds.
3. Argentine Black and White Tegu

- Scientific name: Salvator merianae
- Distribution: Native to South America, particularly Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.
- Diet: Omnivorous, feeding on insects, fruits, eggs and small animals.
- Characteristics:
- A large, ground-dwelling lizard with distinctive black-and-white markings.
- High intelligence for a reptile—capable of target training, recognizing individual handlers, and seeking out social interaction.
- Highly socializable when hand-reared, often displaying cat- or dog-like docility toward familiar caretakers.
4. Snow White Iguana
- Identification: The name may refer to a white-coloured iguana or a particular captive-bred colour morph; the exact species cannot be confirmed from the common name alone.
- Distribution: Depends on the species of iguana involved.
- Habitat: Varies by species; many iguanas inhabit tropical forests and other warm environments.
- Characteristics:
- White or very pale coloration may result from selective breeding or pigmentation-related genetic variation.
- Possesses a functional “third eye” (parietal eye) on top of the head that senses changes in light and movement from above (helping detect aerial predators).
