About the Luni River
- The Luni River is the only significant river system of western Rajasthan and forms the bulk of the region’s arid-zone drainage. It rises from the western slopes of the Aravalli Range near Ajmer and flows generally towards the south-west, ultimately draining into the Rann of Kachchh.
Origin and Course
- The Luni originates near Ajmer at an elevation of about 772 metres above mean sea level.
- It traverses the dry regions of western Rajasthan, with its course associated mainly with the Pali, Jodhpur, Barmer and Jalore regions, before reaching the marshy expanse of the Rann of Kachchh.
- The river system is characterised by erratic rainfall, high evaporation and seasonal flow.
Major Tributaries of the Luni
- The left bank tributaries: Guhiya, Bandi, Sukri, Jawai, Khari and Sagi/Sugi,
- Right-bank tributary: The Jojari (Mithri)
