History of General Insurance Corporation of India

  • Established: 22 November 1972, following the nationalisation of general insurance business under the General Insurance Business (Nationalisation) Act, 1972.
  • Earlier Role: Initially functioned as the holding company for four public sector general insurers—National Insurance, New India Assurance, Oriental Insurance and United India Insurance.
  • Present Role: After the insurance-sector restructuring in 2000, GIC Re was designated as India’s national reinsurer.

 Role in the Reinsurance Market

  • Obligatory Cession: Under Section 101A of the Insurance Act, 1938, IRDAI fixes annually the share of every general insurance policy’s sum insured that insurers must cede to GIC Re — 4% for FY 2026–27, with terrorism premium and the Nuclear Pool exempt.

  • Lines of Cover: Reinsures property, life, health, motor, agriculture, marine, aviation and energy risks.
  • Pool Administration: Administers the Bharat Maritime Insurance Pool (BMIP) — launched by the Department of Financial Services (DFS) on 12 May 2026 with USD 1.5 billion capacity backed by a USD 1.4 billion (₹12,980 crore) sovereign guarantee, covering hull and machinery, cargo, protection and indemnity (P&I) and war risk.

Conclusion

GIC Re grew from the 1972 holding company of four public insurers into the national reinsurer notified in 2000 and listed in 2017. It receives the annual obligatory cession fixed by IRDAI, is classed as a D-SII, and administers the Bharat Maritime Insurance Pool.
