Parole and Furlough

Parole and Furlough

Parole:

  • Temporary release of a prisoner by suspending the sentence under specific conditions.
  • Granted for particular reasons (e.g., death or marriage of a close relative) and subject to good conduct and periodic reporting.
  • It is not a right, and may be denied if considered against public interest.

Furlough:

  • Periodic release granted to long-term prisoners to maintain family and social ties.
  • The furlough period is counted as part of the sentence (remission).
  • Unlike parole, it is considered a right, granted irrespective of specific reasons, subject to eligibility and behavior.
