Important for UPSC Prelims: Economy
What is the Index of Industrial Production (IIP)?
- The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) is a monthly macroeconomic indicator that measures the short-term changes in the volume of industrial production in India. It serves as a key indicator of the overall health and growth of the industrial sector.
- Released by: National Statistical Office (NSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).
- Frequency: Monthly.
- Current Base Year: 2022–23.
- Base Year Index Value: 100.
Coverage of the IIP
The revised IIP (Base Year: 2022–23) covers the following sectors:
- Mining & Quarrying
- Manufacturing
- Electricity
- Gas Supply
- Water Supply
- Sewerage
- Waste Management Activities
Why is the IIP Important?
- Measures the performance of the industrial sector on a monthly basis.
- Serves as a high-frequency indicator of economic activity, as GDP is released quarterly.
- Helps the Government, RBI, and policymakers assess industrial growth and forecast economic growth.
Key Features of the Revised IIP Series (Base Year: 2022–23)
1. New Base Year
- Revised from 2011–12 to 2022–23, aligning the IIP with the latest GDP and GVA series.
2. Expanded Coverage
- Product basket expanded to 1,042 products across 463 item groups (earlier 839 products and 407 groups).
3. Broader Scope
- Now includes Gas Supply, Water Supply, Sewerage, and Waste Management activities.
4. Renewable Energy Classification
- Electricity generation is classified into renewable and non-renewable sources.
5. Revised Weights
- Sectoral and industry weights have been updated based on the GVA (Base Year: 2022–23).
How is IIP Calculated?
- The base year index is fixed at 100.
- Industrial production in subsequent years is measured relative to the base year.
- An IIP value above 100 indicates an increase in industrial production compared to the base year, while a value below 100 indicates lower production.
Difference between IIP and ICI
| Index of Industrial Production (IIP) | Index of Core Industries (ICI) |
| Measures overall industrial production | Measures production of core industries only |
| Covers Mining, Manufacturing, Electricity, Gas Supply, Water Supply, Sewerage & Waste Management | Covers 9 core industries |
| Released by NSO, MoSPI | Released by OEA, DPIIT |
| Comprehensive industrial indicator | Leading indicator of the IIP |
| Base Year: 2022–23 | Base Year: 2022–23 |
Conclusion
The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) is one of India’s most important high-frequency economic indicators, providing timely insights into industrial activity. Its revised 2022–23 series offers broader coverage and improved methodology, making it a more accurate measure of the country’s industrial performance and economic momentum.
