About Ceuta
Ceuta is an autonomous city of Spain located on the northern coast of Africa, along the Strait of Gibraltar. Although geographically situated in Africa, it is politically part of Spain and the European Union (EU).

Location

Political Status
- Ceuta has been under Spanish sovereignty since 1580.
- Became an Autonomous City in 1995.

- Not a part of NATO’s automatic territorial coverage under Article 6, making its defence status unique.
- Morocco continues to claim Ceuta (and Melilla) as part of its territory, while Spain rejects these claims.
Ceuta and Melilla
- Ceuta and Melilla are Spain’s two autonomous cities located on the northern coast of Africa. Together, they constitute the European Union’s only land borders with Africa and serve as strategically important centres for customs, trade, border security and Spain–Morocco relations.
Why is Ceuta a Major Migration Route?
- As Ceuta is part of Spain and the European Union, reaching the city provides migrants access to the EU’s immigration and asylum systems.
- Its close proximity to Morocco makes it one of the shortest routes into Europe, making it a major hotspot for irregular migration, where human trafficking and migrant smuggling networks often exploit vulnerable people.
