Cumulonimbus Clouds (What are they?)
- Cumulonimbus (Cb) clouds are tall, dense and vertically developed clouds associated with strong convection and unstable atmospheric conditions.
- They can produce heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, hail, strong winds and, in some cases, tornadoes.
- They are particularly important in understanding cloudbursts, thunderstorms and extreme weather events.
Key Characteristics of Cumulonimbus Clouds
1. Vertical Development: Cumulonimbus clouds have great vertical extent, often rising from near the surface to the upper troposphere. Their towering structure results from strong upward convection of warm, moist air.
2. Formation Through Convection: Warm and moisture-rich air rises rapidly due to convection. As the air rises, it cools and condenses, forming large cumulonimbus clouds.

4. Heavy Rainfall: Strong updrafts within cumulonimbus clouds allow large quantities of water droplets and ice particles to accumulate. When these particles become too heavy for the updrafts to support, they fall as intense precipitation.
5. Thunder and Lightning: Strong vertical currents cause collisions between ice crystals, hail and supercooled water droplets, leading to separation of electrical charges.The resulting electrical discharge produces lightning and thunder.
6. Hail and Strong Winds: Powerful updrafts can carry water droplets upward into very cold parts of the cloud, where they freeze and grow into hailstones. Downdrafts can also generate strong and gusty winds near the surface.
7. Association with Cloudbursts: Intense convection associated with cumulonimbus clouds can contribute to very heavy, localised rainfall. In suitable atmospheric and geographical conditions, such intense rainfall may result in a cloudburst.
