About ASEAN

  • ASEAN stands for Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
  • It was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand.
  • It was founded through the ASEAN Declaration, also known as the Bangkok Declaration.
  • The five founding members were Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.
  • ASEAN aims to promote regional peace, stability, economic growth and cooperation among Southeast Asian countries

ASEAN currently has 11 Member States:

  • Brunei Darussalam
  • Cambodia
  • Indonesia
  • Lao PDR
  • Malaysia
  • Myanmar
  • Philippines
  • Singapore
  • Thailand
  • Timor-Leste
  • Viet Nam

Expansion of ASEAN

  • 1967 – Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand became the founding members
  • 1984 – Brunei Darussalam joined
  • 1995 – Viet Nam joined
  • 1997 – Lao PDR and Myanmar joined
  • 1999 – Cambodia joined, completing the earlier ASEAN-10
  • 2025Timor-Leste became the 11th member

ASEAN Community

  • The ASEAN Community is organised around three major pillars:
  • ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC)
    → Regional peace, security and political cooperation
  • ASEAN Economic Community (AEC)
    → Economic integration, trade and investment
  • ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC)
    → Social development, education, culture, health and people-to-people cooperation
