What is Exercise KAZIND?

About Exercise KAZIND

  • Exercise KAZIND is the bilateral military exercise between the armed forces of India and Kazakhstan, conducted alternately in the two countries to build interoperability, share tactical expertise and strengthen defence cooperation.

Evolution & Scope

  • Origin: Began in 2016 as Exercise Prabal Dostyk.
  • Upgradation: Renamed Exercise KAZIND and raised to a company-level engagement after its second edition.
  • Bi-Service Expansion: In 2023, Air Force contingents were added to the army ground forces, making it a bi-service exercise.
  • Core Focus: Joint counter-terrorism operations in semi-urban and mountainous terrain under a United Nations mandate.
  • Key Drills: Joint planning, search-and-destroy missions, raids, cordon-and-search operations, Special Heliborne Operations, helipad security and integrated use of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and Counter-UAS capabilities, with a Joint Command Post and an Intelligence & Surveillance Centre.

Strategic Significance

  • Policy Anchor: Supports India’s Connect Central Asia Policy by building capacity against terrorism, extremism and instability in the extended neighbourhood.
  • Peacekeeping Synergy: Cooperation built through KAZIND has enabled Kazakh troops to serve within the Indian Battalion at UNIFIL, Lebanon.

Conclusion

Exercise KAZIND, evolved from Prabal Dostyk (2016), is the India–Kazakhstan counter-terrorism exercise under a UN mandate, made bi-service in 2023 and now in its ninth edition at Oskemen.

Founded on the 2015 defence cooperation agreement, it links India’s Connect Central Asia Policy with joint peacekeeping engagement.
