About INS Trishul

  • INS Trishul (F43) is a Talwar-class (Project 1135.6) guided-missile stealth frigate of the Indian Navy, designed for multi-dimensional maritime warfare, including anti-surface, anti-air and anti-submarine operations, with reduced radar, acoustic and infrared signatures.

Heritage and Construction of INS Trishul

  • Name Legacy: INS Trishul revives the name of the earlier Whitby-class frigate, launched in 1959 and commissioned in 1960, with battle honours in the Liberation of Goa (1961), Indo-Pakistani War (1971) and Operation Pawan (1987–1989).
  • Construction: Built by Baltic Shipyard (Baltiysky Zavod), St. Petersburg, Russia; laid down on 24 September 1999, launched on 24 November 2000, and commissioned on 25 June 2003.
  • Army Affiliation: Affiliated with the JAT Regiment of the Indian Army on 10 January 2009 to promote inter-service jointmanship.

Armament and Modernisation Upgrades

  • Strike Missiles: Originally fitted with an 8-cell KBSM 3S-14NE launcher for Klub-N/3M-54E missiles; later upgraded with a BrahMos-capable Universal Vertical Launcher Module (UVLM).
  • Air Defence: Equipped with Shtil-1 medium-range surface-to-air missiles (24 missiles) and Igla-1E (SA-16) point-defence missiles.
  • Main Gun: Upgraded from the 100 mm A-190E to a 76 mm OTO Melara Super Rapid Gun Mount (SRGM) with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) Lynx-U2 fire-control radar.
  • Close-In Defence: Kashtan system replaced by two 30 mm AK-630 CIWS and four 12.7 mm Stabilised Remote Controlled Guns (SRCG).
  • Anti-Submarine Systems: Two twin 533 mm torpedo tubes and RBU-6000 rocket launcher, supported by Atlas Elektronik ACTAS towed-array sonar and an anti-torpedo decoy suite.
