Introduction
A cloudburst is an extreme localized weather event involving very heavy rainfall (over 100 mm/hour) over a small area (20–30 sq. km.) within a short period. While naturally occurring, climate change, rising temperatures, and environmental degradation have increased its frequency and intensity, especially in the Himalayan region, triggering flash floods, landslides, and widespread destruction, thereby posing significant challenges to India’s disaster management system.
What is a Cloudburst?
- A cloudburst is an extreme precipitation event where enormous quantities of rain fall over a localized area within a few hours.
- Usually associated with Cumulonimbus (Cb) clouds.
- Common in mountainous regions where moist air rises rapidly.
IMD Definition: Rainfall exceeding 100 mm per hour over a localized area is generally considered a cloudburst.
